Skin Cancer Screening: From Home And Beyond

About Me
A New You

A couple of years ago, I noticed a bump growing on my face. At first, I didn’t worry about this development. I assumed the bump would eventually go away on its own. Unfortunately, the lump on my face continued to grow. Because it was close to my right eye, I decided to make an appointment with a local dermatologist. This kind, experienced physician informed me that the bump on my face was actually a harmless cyst. With a small tool, she expertly removed the cyst from my face. The procedure was relatively painless. On this blog, I hope you will discover some pain free solutions dermatologists use to improve people’s facial appearances. Enjoy!

Skin Cancer Screening: From Home And Beyond

Skin cancer is a medical issue that targets millions of people every year. While a widespread problem, one of the more positive aspects of this disease is that early intervention often leads to a more favorable prognosis. However, this statement is most accurate when individuals are proactive with their care and, most importantly, the screening process. From your home bathroom to a physician's office, learn more about the screening process.

It Starts at Home

Ideally, the skin cancer screening process should begin in your home, right in front of the bathroom mirror. As part of the screening process, position yourself directly in front of a full-length mirror. Look over the entire front area of your body to see if you have any moles or raised spots. For the backside of your body, asks a family member for help.

For the most part, you are looking to see if you have any new spots on your skin, or if any existing areas on your skin have changed, such as a mole that has changed in color, size, or shape.

Know the Risks

If you notice anything out of the norm, it is good to schedule an appointment with a physician. However, even if the self-exam appears normal, people with certain risk factors are at a heightened risk for skin cancer and should be examined by a physician.

Individuals with a large number of moles, those who spend excessive amounts of time exposed to the sun, have very fair skin, or who have a family history of skin cancer should have a follow-up visit performed by a physician.

Prepare for an In-Office Visit

A cancer screening might sound uncomfortable, and maybe even slightly frightening. However, a physician-performed screening is an easy process. For the most part, the physician will perform the same type of process you did at home, in that they are looking over your skin and feeling the skin surface for anything that seems out of the norm.

For any areas of concern, the physician might spend a few extra moments looking over them or may use a magnifying tool for a closer look. Best of all, the process is not very long, and you will generally have details of the exam on the same day.

Whether you are at an increased risk for skin cancer or not, be sure to contact a physician to learn more about the screening process that is so important. Reach out to a clinic like Hamzavi Dermatology to learn more.
